Unsuitable project Re: your June 24 article, "Knolls apartment plan has many foes": I read with great interest that "a representative for Judy Mikels said the supervisor is always looking for opportunities for affordable projects that include farmworker housing." I have lived in Simi Valley for 40 years, 27 of which have been in the Knolls. The Knolls is the farthest point east in Ventura County, bordering the Los Angeles County line. I am not aware of any farmland within miles of the Knolls, therefore, affordable housing for farmworkers does not seem to be a valid issue. The proposed property for 150 to 250 apartments on Katherine Road is parallel to Peppertree Lane, which is a private, one-lane road. Katherine Road is a two-way street with no parking on the side of the road. The proposed apartment complex is next to a railroad crossing. There are frequent stops for passing trains, which already cause lengthy delays in traffic. Katherine Road is the only street, in or out, of the Knolls on the northeast end. The Knolls area is a high-risk fire area. A fire, earthquake or any other serious condition needing evacuation would quickly become a dangerous situation. An apartment complex in this rural area does not make any logical sense. -- Alice M. Sowter, Santa Susana Knolls |
